Drew Moore undertook a renovation to our home in 2009. The project involved a major rebuild and modernisation of a I 960s skill ion roof weatherboard cottage into a modern energy efficient home at a total cost of just under $300,000. The project involved extending the existing foot-print in three separate directions with three different exterior finishes (weather board, colorbond and express jointed fibro) and replacing all existing windows, installing a new kitchen and creating a second bathroom.
When searching for the right builder we imagined the complexity and fiddly nature of the project might make it an unattractive proposition. However, our perception is that Drew saw this as an opportunity to expose his staff to a diverse and interesting project requiring a variety of skills and techniques. By way of example, on one occasion we arrived home to discover there had been a challenge matching floor levels from two separate sections of the existing house with a new section. In response to our apologies for the difficulty presented by this situation, Drew simply indicated that it provided an opportunity for staff to gain experience in problem solving. This was characteristic of our interaction with Drew, and the way he encouraged and supported his staff.
Nothing seemed too difficult and everything was approached politely and with a positive attitude. The project was complicated by our desire to live on site in a caravan with ongoing access to the existing bathroom and laundry. Living onsite provided us with a huge advantage of regular contact and communication which I am sure assisted the process. However, it meant Drew needed to ensure the site was safe and tidy on a daily basis and to communicate any potential dangers. We were always highly impressed with his regular and clear communication and his commitment to ensuring high standard of occupational safety as well as a respect for our privacy.
Throughout the process we felt highly respected, not only by Drew but also by all his staff and subcontractors. Drew and his team were always approachable, easy to communicate with and kept us informed as the project progressed. We were impressed at how well his team worked together, supported each other and were always punctual, reliable, polite, neat, tidy and hard working. We have no doubt this was largely due to Drew’s professionalism and leadership with his staff. In addition, subcontractors were timely and clearly responsive to Drew which meant we weren’t left waiting for subcontracted jobs to be completed.
At the outset Drew undertook a thorough costing and project management plan which was communicated to us and the project was completed both on time and on budget (other than a few minor negotiated variations).
Overall we were impressed by Drew’s professionalism, organisational and negotiation skills, quality of the work undertaken, and, honesty and integrity. He took the stress out of what could have been a nightmare experience and we have recommend Drew as a builder to a number of close friends without reservation.
